Shanghai with Kids

From Disney magic to giant panda encounters, Shanghai is surprisingly family-friendly. Here are the best things to do with kids of every age.

Shanghai is surprisingly family-friendly

Many travelers assume Shanghai is a concrete jungle built for business travelers and nightlife. The reality surprises them: the city has one of the world's best Disney parks, an aquarium with a 155-meter underwater tunnel, natural history exhibits with life-size dinosaur skeletons, and more green space per capita than most Asian megacities. Chinese culture is deeply family-oriented, which means restaurants welcome children, Metro stations have family restrooms, and you will never get side-eye for bringing a stroller into a nice restaurant.

For families with young children (under 6), prioritize Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, Century Park, and the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel — all are stroller-friendly and engaging without being overwhelming. For older kids (6+), the Science and Technology Museum and Shanghai Circus World are unforgettable. Shanghai Disneyland is a full-day commitment; book tickets online in advance and arrive at opening to maximize your time before afternoon crowds and heat set in.

Practical tips for visiting Shanghai with kids

The Metro is the fastest way around with kids — it is clean, air-conditioned, and stroller-accessible via the elevators at most stations (follow the "wheelchair accessible" signs). Chinese restaurants are child-friendly; high chairs appear on request and staff are patient with mess. Bring a stroller everywhere: Shanghai is surprisingly flat in the tourist zones, and there are frequent elevators in malls and Metro stations. In summer, plan indoor activities for midday when the heat and UV are highest, and save parks for morning or late afternoon.

Booking matters. Disneyland and the Science and Technology Museum should be reserved online in advance — during school holidays (July to August, Chinese New Year, Golden Week) slots fill fast. Carry your passport for museum entry. For babies, pack a light jacket for the air-conditioned museums, which are kept cool year-round. Pace yourself: one major activity plus a park or playground is about right for a day. The 5-day itinerary works well for families because it builds in recovery mornings.
